8 Surprising Connections Between the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Nominees
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards are just around the corner, set to air on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on CBS and stream on Paramount+.
As I was looking over the list of this year’s nominees, I started to notice some interesting connections.
Allow me to share!
1 - From Gotham to The Emerald City: Cristin Milioti and Cynthia Erivo
Both of these works have a character named Oz, but that’s not the only connection!
Did you know that Cristin Milioti, nominated for her role as Sofia Falcone in “The Penguin,” once auditioned for the role of Elphaba in “Wicked”? Cynthia Erivo ended up getting the part and it earned her a well deserved nomination this year.
Everything happened as it should! Can you imagine anyone but these two playing those roles?
2 - “The Bear” Meets “Inside Out 2”
Ayo Edebiri has had a busy year! She’s up for her role in “The Bear”, but did you know she also voiced Envy in this year’s Best Animated Movie contender “Inside Out 2”? She’s got range!
3 - Dune Duo: Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya
Our favorite sci-fi duo from “Dune: Part Two” are both nominated for acting this year. While “Dune: Part Two” is nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama, these two have acting nominations for completely different projects. Timothée Chalamet is up for his role in “A Complete Unknown,” while Zendaya is getting recognition for “Challengers.” Maybe they can carpool (via a sandworm) to the ceremony?
4 - Succession’s Sibling Rivalry Continues
Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong just can’t escape competition, can they? After wrapping up “Succession,” they’re now both nominated in the film category for Best Supporting Actor. Some habits die hard!
5 - “Love Actually” is All Around
Will we see a “Love Actually” reunion at the Globes?!
Keira Knightley, Billy Bob Thornton, and Hugh Grant are all up for acting awards. And if that wasn’t enough, Bill Nighy (aka the legendary Billy Mack) voiced Longneck in “The Wild Robot,” which is nominated for Best Animated Film.
Is it too much to hope for an impromptu “Christmas Is All Around” performance?
6 - Selena Gomez: Double Threat
Selena Gomez achieves the rare (wink, wink) feat of dual nominations. She’s up for both her film role as Jessi Del Monte in “Emilia Perez” and her TV role as Mabel Mora in “Only Murders in the Building.”
It’s safe to say she’s cemented herself as a talented actress in the industry!
7 - From “Bad Moms” to Best Actresses
Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, who both starred in the hilarious “Bad Moms,” are facing off in the Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy category. Kristen is up for her role in “Nobody Wants This” and Kathryn is up for her role in “Agatha All Along.”
Who says bad moms can’t be the best?
8 - “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” and Hollywood’s New Generation
The legacy of "Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood" continues at the Golden Globes. Margaret Qualley and Mikey Madison, who both had roles in the Golden Globe winning film, are up for acting nominations this year. Margaret is nominated for her role in “The Substance” and Mikey is nominated for her role in “Anora.”
Bonus: Host with the Most
And here’s a fun twist – this year’s host, Nikki Glaser, is also a nominee for her comedy special, “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die.”
There you have it – eight (plus one) surprising connections that make this year’s Golden Globes even more exciting to watch.
Which connection surprised you the most? Are there any fun connections that I missed?
And don’t forget to tune in on January 5th. With all these connections, who knows what might happen, right?
